What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to individuals or couples before, during, and after childbirth. The term "doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves." There are different types of doulas who specialize in various stages of the childbirth process:

  • Antepartum Doula: Provides support during pregnancy, often for individuals on bed rest or experiencing high-risk pregnancies.
  • Prenatal Doula or Birth Doula: Provides support during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth, offering emotional support, comfort measures, advocacy, and assistance with birth planning.
  • Labor and Delivery Doula: Specifically focuses on providing support during labor and childbirth, offering physical and emotional support, advocacy, and guidance to birthing individuals and their partners.
  • Postpartum Doula: Provides support after childbirth, assisting with newborn care, breastfeeding support, emotional support, household tasks, and adjustment to parenthood.

Overall, doulas aim to provide personalized care and support to individuals and families as they navigate the childbirth journey, empowering them to make informed decisions and advocating for their preferences during this transformative time. While doulas do not provide medical care or clinical interventions, they complement the care provided by healthcare professionals and can significantly enhance the childbirth experience for families.
